A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
